“The Charlotte Symphony Goes Country” – June 7
The Symphony starts the summer season in the Wild West. Enjoy music from the American frontier, including John Williams’ The Cowboys,Aaron Copland’s “Hoedown” from Rodeo, and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!.
“Magical Night Music” – June 14
On June 14, the Symphony explores mystery and magic in some of the most famous music from Broadway and Hollywood. Themes from Harry Potter, Phantom of the Opera, and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as orchestral favorites such as Night on Bald Mountain and Sorcerer’s Apprentice will cast spells and create enchantment.
“Dance Night at Symphony Park” – June 21
Bring your dancing shoes for “Dance Night at Symphony Park” on June 21. Toe-tapping symphonic hits such as Offenbach’s “Can-Can,” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances,” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” partner with swinging selections like “Duke Ellington Fantasy” and “San Luis Samba.”
“That’s Amore!” – June 28
The Symphony takes a Roman holiday on June 28 with a night of Italian-themed music. Highlights include Verdi’s Overture to La Forza del Destino, Rossini’s Overture to Le Gazza Ladra, and Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italian.” The Summer Pops annual picnic contest will take place this night, with three prizes awarded to the best picnic layouts.
“Celebrate America” – July 3
The summer season ends with a bang on July 3 at the Symphony’s most popular concert of the year, the annual “Celebrate America.” Albert-George Schram leads the orchestra in patriotic favorites, including “America the Beautiful,” “Armed Forces Salute,” Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” and Sousa’s “Liberty Bell March.” The concert culminates in an impressive array of fireworks.
Summer Pops 2009: Other Community Locations
In addition to the Symphony Park shows, the Charlotte Symphony will perform several free outdoor concerts in the surrounding Charlotte area.
